This very short history of Leyton and Leytonstone is about an area - the parish,
Urban District and Borough of Leyton - which no longer has any official existence.
But it does have some natural boundaries : the River Lea on the west, flowing through
marshes, and to the east and northeast barren areas without much topsoil, Wanstead
Flats and Leyton Flats (usually called Hollow Ponds), which are now open space administered
by the City of London Corporation as part of Epping Forest.
