The Black Path by David Boote
The Black Path may have got its name from having a dark, peat-like surface, but the land was used to grow grass for hay-cutting and pasture. In the late 19th century its surface may have been ash from Walthamstow Council’s incinerator at nearby Low Hall. The boundary through the marshes between Walthamstow and Leyton was marked with black poplars, with some replanted ones still surviving.
