The role of women
One local woman, who had worked at the London Electrical Wire Company in the First World War, returned to work there during World War Two, but when the men returned they took back the jobs that the women had been doing 1. But over time more women took jobs, including mothers of school age children. This was the period when the role of the housewife was diminished by increased availability of machines and materials to reduce housework, fewer jobs requiring physical strength and stamina, greater willingness of employers to have women in their workforce - and by proliferation of images of women for men to lust for, in magazines, cinema films and advertising.
