Famous people who came from our area

Martha (Maureen) Ross, actress, raised a family in Leytonstone of whom Jonathan Ross (born 1960) has become world-famous and Paul Ross a well-known radio and television personality.

June Sarpong, born in 1977, has presented shows on MTV and Channel 4.  She was educated at Connaught Girls School in Leytonstone and Sir George Monoux College in Walthamstow.  She has run her own TV production company, Lipgloss Productions, has been an ambassador for The Prince's Trust and campaigned for the Make Poverty History movement.  She was awarded the MBE in 2007.   June's brother is Sam Sarpong, an actor and TV presenter.


Footballer David Beckham was born in Whipps Cross Hospital and his family was living in Norman Road, Leytonstone at the time.



Athlete and singer-songwriter Jo(anne) Mersh in 1974 in Leytonstone) went to Mayville Primary School competed in the 800 metres event at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games as Joanne Fenn.

Footballer Justin Hoyte was born in Leytonstone in 1984.  Footballer Curtis Davies was born in Leytonstone in 1985.
