alcohol consumption and pubs

Pubs were often the dominant buildings visually, their only rivals being churches, chapels, cinemas and banks.  Large breweries bought pubs and rebuilt them to a more imposing design.  This happened to the Green Man, the Red Lion, the Lion & Key, the Three Blackbirds and the William IV (photo left).  Highly glazed tiles were often used on the exterior, resisting smoke pollution.  Etched window and door glass made the most of gas lighting.  >>
