2  ‘The Leyton and Leytonstone Ratepayers' Association, Its Origin and History : being a Record of Municipal Life in Leyton for nearly a quarter of a century’



The Leyton and Leytonstone Ratepayers' Association greatly reduced the West Ham Board of Guardians’ expenditure on alcohol, and its Honorary Secretary R J Tallack (a civil servant) appeared for years at the Brewster Sessions to oppose licences for pubs and ‘off-licences’ (shops).  So for example there was nowhere on the Barclay Estate to buy alcoholic drinks . 2
