1997 onwards
The low sense of community in the area is often attributed to its ethnic diversity. I believe this is an excuse given by those who choose to make little contribution to Leyton today.
In the 21st century a serious problem has arisen with gangs, mainly of Afro-Caribbean descent, identifying themselves with particular housing estates and using both routine intimidation and occasional extreme violence against other gangs. This is a phenomenon of the neighbourhoods rebuilt by the Waltham Forest Housing Trust. Paul Erhahon was murdered by a large group of youths and children at Gean Court and some of those convicted came from addresses like Corn Way.
